About Daily Diff

A daily digest of technology communities.

Daily Diff gathers Hacker News, Lobsters and Programming.dev. Follow an article or its discussion, and return for the next edition.

Daily editions

Top 10 and Top 20 are independent editions. Checkpoints occur every 2 hours 24 minutes and 1 hour 12 minutes respectively. Both finish at midnight UTC. Dates and checkpoints always use UTC. Reading timestamps may display your local time.

Each community has its own independent editions. The homepage combines communities. Stories may appear on consecutive days. Above median shows the upper part of the daily ranking, evaluated now for today or at UTC day-end for an archive.

Observations and archives

We collect submissions with at least 5 points and observe them during their first 72 hours. Gaps and initial history can be reconstructed using calculated observations. Historical counts may be calculated; these are not measured historical facts. Their provenance is available in administrator observation records. Discovery coverage can be incomplete. Rankings and archives can change when settings or observations change.

Made for reading

Reading and navigation work without JavaScript. The main community feeds show newest editions first, with dates separating days. They load 20 stories at a time, when you press Load more, appending with JavaScript or opening the next page without it. Separate browser cookies remember your edition choice for each community and the homepage, your reading activity and pro mode. Blocking cookies leaves ordinary links usable. Optional keyboard shortcuts and local timestamps enhance the same pages.
